About Supervised Contact

Children’s Supervised Contact

Supervised contact allows quality time for children to build and maintain relationships with family members from whom they are separated.

Contact is facilitated in a safe, child focused confidential setting and service. During a contact visit children remain safe from physical, sexual and emotional abuse.

Why Supervised Contact ?

  • Parents may agree Supervised Contact is necessary.

  • There may never have been contact between a parent and child or contact has not occurred for a long time.

  • The Family Court has made an order for Supervised Contact.

  • Children may be in the care of Child Youth and Family Services.

Benefits of supervised contact

  • Children continue or form a safe relationship with family members who are important to them

  • The safety and privacy of all parties is a priority.

  • Children and visiting family members can meet together in a safe environment.

Costs and Funding

The cost will vary dependent on factors such as

  • The service providing contact

  • Whether contact has been ordered by the Family Court

  • Whether the child is in the care of Child Youth and Family Services

  • The income level of the visiting parent/s

In December 2002 the Government signalled that it will contribute towards the cost of contact ordered by the Family Courts. This funding is now available to providers approved by Child Youth and Family. Please talk to your lawyer or service provider for more information.

Service providers can contact the Ministry of Justice for further information about how such approval can be applied for.
